Page 79 "Beach by Charles Golden (1948)"

The painting is by Leon Goldin. The painting is at the Brooklyn Museum but, due to copyright restrictions, only a small black and white image is available. 

Brooks writes "Ochre sand, red and blue agitations of calligraphy in contrast to the large flat areas of sand. A finely conceived canvas from a nature motif seen afresh."

 Brooks writes: " A modern poetic statement. Soft warm grays and off-whites carefully patterned on the canvas surface. Oriental themes suggested in the dark shapes and accented forms."

 A full page black and white illustration in the book. The painting is in the collection of the Winnipeg Art Gallery but an image is not available.  The painting is listed at the York Wilson Foundation.  "Ydra" is an island in Greece. also known as "Hydra".

Page 76 "Fantasia in Blue by Hans Hofmann (1954)"

 Medium black and white illustration in the book. 

Brooks writes: "Strong contrasts, vigorous and exciting brushwork and textures by a veteran Abstractionist who has influenced the American scene. A staccato theme vibrant in blues and whites."

A discussion of Hofmann's ideas can be found in the 1963 catalog of his exhibition at MoMA. Brooks recommends the catalog on page 30.
